Using AI to understand documents better

January 7, 2025 · 3 minute read

Living in a different country comes with its unique set of challenges, and one of the biggest hurdles I faced was dealing with official documents in a foreign language. Whether it was rental agreements, insurance papers, or government notices, each document felt like a puzzle I couldn't solve.

Sure, I could copy and paste the text into a translator, but that was slow and often missed the important context. If the document was about taxes, insurance, or housing, I did not just need a translation. I needed to know what it meant, whether I should be worried, and what I had to do next.

That usually led to more searching, more tabs, and eventually asking ChatGPT to help me understand whether I needed to take action.

So I decided to build something that not only translates documents, but also explains them in plain English.

The Idea

The goal was to build an app that could:

  • Analyze any document, regardless of the original language
  • Pull out the important details and deadlines
  • Highlight urgent or important information
  • Explain what actions you need to take

The goal was not just to translate words. It was to bridge the gap between receiving a document and understanding what to do with it.

I built Paiper and made it free to help people like me who struggle with documents in unfamiliar languages.

A Glimpse of the App

For a quick demo, I uploaded an Elon Musk resume example I found here. This is the result I got:

Paiper document analysis showing a summarized resume with extracted insights

The app uses AI to:

  1. Scan and understand: Upload a document and let the app analyze it.
  2. Summarize intelligently: Go beyond word-for-word translation and explain the meaning.
  3. Extract action items: Show what needs to be done, when, and why it matters.
  4. Highlight key information: Pull out deadlines, amounts, requirements, and important details.

The best part about building this app has been seeing how it helps people in similar situations.

I asked one of my friends to try it. They later told me it helped them understand their child's school documents in a new country and feel more confident handling paperwork without constantly asking for help.

That was the best validation I could ask for.

I'm continuously working on making the app even better at understanding different types of documents and providing more detailed insights. The goal is simple: no one should feel helpless when faced with important documents in a foreign language.

Whether you are an expat, an international student, or just dealing with documents from another country, I built Paiper to solve my own problem. I hope it can solve yours too.

Let's break down those language barriers together.
